The Line Gap Between Intentional Design and Vibe Coding

Building a website used to require a clear division of labour. Designers shaped the experience, developers translated that vision into code, and strategists decided how the platform should support the business behind it. Even a relatively simple website demanded technical knowledge, specialised tools, and a meaningful investment of time.

That barrier has fallen quickly.

Today, someone can describe a product in ordinary language and watch an AI coding tool generate the interface, create the files, connect basic functionality, and revise the result through conversation. A founder with limited development experience can move from an idea to a working prototype in hours. A marketer can create an internal dashboard without waiting for an engineering team. A designer can test an interaction without building every component manually.

This shift has been captured by the term “vibe coding,” introduced by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in early 2025 to describe a highly conversational approach in which the user directs an AI system and pays progressively less attention to the underlying code. Since then, coding agents have become considerably more capable. Tools such as Codex, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot can now inspect repositories, modify multiple files, execute commands, run tests, and complete increasingly complex development tasks with a degree of autonomy.

The attraction is obvious. Vibe coding makes creation feel immediate. You describe what you want, react to what appears, and continue prompting until the result looks close enough to the idea in your head.

The problem begins when that process is mistaken for design.

A website can be generated quickly without being strategically considered. It can function without being intuitive. It can appear polished without expressing anything distinctive about the brand it represents. Vibe coding has dramatically reduced the effort required to produce digital output, but reducing production effort is not the same as improving the quality of the finished experience.

The important question is therefore not whether AI should be used to build websites. It already is, and it will become increasingly embedded in professional workflows. The more useful question is where generated production ends and intentional design begins.

Vibe Coding is Powerful Precisely Because it Removes Friction

It would be easy for traditional designers and developers to dismiss vibe coding as amateur work. That reaction would be both arrogant and shortsighted.

The technology is genuinely useful. It allows ideas to be tested before a business commits significant resources. It helps small teams create tools that might otherwise remain permanently buried in a project backlog. It can automate repetitive implementation, produce initial component structures, explore technical approaches, and accelerate the distance between a concept and something people can actually use.

Modern coding agents are no longer limited to completing a line of code inside an editor. OpenAI describes Codex as capable of handling features, refactors, migrations, reviews, and other end-to-end engineering tasks. GitHub’s agent tools can identify relevant files, make changes, execute terminal commands, and propose pull requests. Anthropic positions Claude Code as an assistant that can understand a codebase, fix bugs, build features, and automate development workflows.

This makes vibe coding particularly effective for prototypes, experiments, temporary campaigns, internal applications, proof-of-concept products, and narrowly defined utilities. In those situations, speed may be more valuable than perfection. The objective is often to test whether an idea deserves further investment, not to establish the permanent digital face of a business.

Trouble begins when a prototype is quietly promoted into a production product.

A rough internal tool can survive inconsistencies because its users already understand its purpose. A public website does not have that privilege. New visitors arrive without context. They judge the business through what they see, what they can understand, and how easily they can complete what they came to do.

The standards change the moment the experience represents a real brand.

A Generated Website Answers The Prompt, Not Necessarily The Problem

Vibe coding tends to begin with a request such as:

“Create a premium website for a healthcare company.”

The system then has to interpret several undefined concepts. What does premium mean in this context? Who is the healthcare company serving? What concerns do its patients have? Which information must appear first? What would make the experience feel reassuring rather than cold? What actions should visitors take? What claims require evidence? How should the brand balance professional authority with accessibility?

Without those decisions, the AI falls back on patterns.

It may generate a large headline, a dark gradient, glowing cards, rounded buttons, a row of statistics, and a few sections carrying generic statements about innovation, trust, and excellence. The result may look modern in isolation, but it has not necessarily solved anything specific to the organization.

This is one of the most important differences between prompting and design. A prompt asks for an output. Design investigates what the output must accomplish.

Professional design rarely begins with appearance. It begins with questions about the business, the audience, the market, the message, the content, and the decisions users need to make. Visual direction emerges from those answers. The interface is not a decorative layer added after the strategy; it is how the strategy becomes usable.

A generated page may fulfil the literal wording of a prompt while missing the reason the page needs to exist.

The Most Visible Risk is Not Bad Design, But Digital Sameness

Poorly generated websites are easy to criticize. Their layouts break, their spacing feels inconsistent, or their copy is obviously unfinished. Those problems are visible and can often be corrected.

The more difficult problem is competent sameness.

As AI tools become better, the average generated website will stop looking obviously bad. It will look clean, current, and professionally assembled. That sounds like progress, but it creates a different challenge: when everyone has access to the same models, references, component libraries, and design vocabulary, acceptable work becomes abundant.

The internet fills with oversized typography, soft gradients, glass effects, animated grids, floating product cards, and familiar combinations of neutral backgrounds with bright accent colors. None of these techniques is inherently weak. The weakness lies in using them without a reason beyond the fact that they are recognizably contemporary.

A premium digital experience is not defined by how many current design trends it contains. It is defined by how precisely the experience belongs to the brand.

The distinction may appear through typography, pacing, image direction, interaction, language, information hierarchy, or the deliberate absence of unnecessary elements. It may come from translating something specific about the company into a digital behavior that competitors cannot simply copy without looking ridiculous.

This kind of distinction is difficult to create through a generic prompt because it depends on judgement. It requires someone to decide which possibilities are appropriate, which are fashionable but irrelevant, and which details deserve to become part of the brand’s identity.

AI can generate options at extraordinary speed. It cannot remove the need to choose well.

Design is a Sequence of Decisions, Not a Collection of Screens

When people evaluate a website, they usually focus first on what is visible: the colors, images, typography, layout, and animation. Those elements matter, but they are only the surface of the design.

Underneath them is a larger system of decisions.

Which audience is the website speaking to? What should that audience understand within the first few seconds? Which services require their own pages? How should complex information be organized? What objections should the content address? Which action should receive the most visual emphasis? What can be removed without damaging comprehension? How does the mobile experience change when space becomes limited? What happens when the business adds new locations, products, articles, or team members?

A website that has been designed intentionally responds to these questions as one connected system. A website assembled through a series of reactive prompts can easily become a collection of isolated solutions.

The hero section may communicate one message while the service pages communicate another. The navigation may reflect the company’s internal structure rather than the customer’s needs. New sections may be added whenever the prompt changes, producing a longer page without producing a clearer journey.

This is not exclusively an AI problem. Human teams have built disorganized websites for decades. Vibe coding simply makes it possible to reach that disorder much faster.

Speed amplifies the quality of the decisions behind it. When the direction is strong, faster implementation is valuable. When the direction is weak, speed produces more material that eventually needs to be reconsidered.

A Website is Part of a Business System

For a serious organization, a website does not exist simply to look impressive. It has to work with search engines, analytics, content publishing, customer enquiries, product data, memberships, bookings, payments, internal workflows, and future expansion.

This is where the difference between a convincing demonstration and a durable platform becomes clearer.

A promotional landing page may only need to perform one function for a limited period. For example, a clinic website may need to organize treatment information, practitioner profiles, locations, patient resources, medical review processes, and search-led content.

An e-commerce platform may need to connect product discovery, inventory, accounts, professional rewards, loyalty benefits, and customer communication. An international organisation may need to manage centres, academy boards, instructors, events, and information across several markets.

The visible interface is only one part of the work.

When development is driven mostly by immediate prompting, the system may be shaped around what looks correct today rather than what the organization will require tomorrow. Components are created without a consistent logic. Content is embedded in ways that make future updates difficult. Integrations are added without considering how they interact. A temporary workaround becomes a permanent dependency because nobody fully understands the structure that produced it.

Intentional development anticipates change. It asks not only whether the website works now, but whether it can be maintained, extended, measured, and trusted after launch.

SEO Cannot Be Added After The Design is Finished

A common misconception is that web design happens first and SEO can be applied once the website looks complete.

That separation was already weak before vibe coding. It becomes even more dangerous when pages can be generated rapidly without considering their role within a broader search strategy.

Search visibility is shaped by more than metadata and keywords. It depends on how content is structured, how pages relate to one another, how important topics are represented, how users and crawlers navigate the platform, and whether the website contains enough depth to demonstrate meaningful expertise.

A visually polished five-page website may be almost useless for organic growth if every service has been compressed into a single overview. A redesign may reduce search performance if valuable pages are removed, URLs are changed carelessly, internal links disappear, or content is replaced with shorter marketing copy. An animated interface may create a strong presentation while making essential information harder to access or interpret.

These are not problems that can be solved by asking an AI tool to “make the website SEO-friendly.” The phrase is too vague to carry any strategic value.

SEO requires decisions about demand, topics, page purpose, information architecture, internal relationships, technical accessibility, and content quality. Those decisions should shape the website before the interface is finalized.

A vibe-coded website may look finished long before it has been properly reviewed.

The buttons work. The forms submit. The pages appear responsive. From the outside, the project seems complete. Yet the most serious weaknesses may exist beneath the visible interface: insecure permissions, exposed credentials, poor data handling, inaccessible components, duplicated logic, fragile dependencies, missing edge cases, or code that becomes difficult to maintain as the platform grows.

The companies building AI coding systems do not present autonomous generation as a reason to abandon review. Their own product documentation emphasizes test results, terminal logs, approval controls, code review, sandboxing, and verification. Anthropic advises users to review commands and verify changes to critical files, while OpenAI describes transparency and the ability to inspect an agent’s work as important safeguards.

That should tell businesses something important. Even the organizations developing the most capable coding agents recognize that generation and accountability are different functions.

AI may propose the implementation, but someone must still be responsible for deciding whether the implementation is appropriate. That responsibility cannot be delegated to the same system that produced the work and then treated as independently resolved because the system says the result is correct.

For low-risk experiments, this may not matter greatly. For websites handling personal information, accounts, payments, healthcare enquiries, or business-critical operations, it matters enormously.

Intentional Design is Not The Rejection of AI

The strongest response to vibe coding is not to return to slower methods for the sake of tradition.

Refusing to use AI does not make a designer more thoughtful, just as using AI does not make a developer careless. The value lies in understanding what should be accelerated and what still requires deliberate judgement.

AI can help explore directions, generate technical starting points, produce variations, identify inconsistencies, draft documentation, support testing, and remove repetitive work. Used well, it creates more space for the parts of a project that deserve human attention.

The mistake is allowing the tool to define the direction simply because it can produce the output.

A considered workflow begins with positioning, audience understanding, content requirements, functional priorities, visual principles, and technical constraints. AI then operates within that framework. Its speed serves the concept rather than replacing it.

This is the difference between using AI as leverage and using it as a substitute for expertise.

Knowing When “Good Enough” is Not Good Enough

Vibe coding is likely to raise the minimum standard of the web. More people will be able to produce functional websites, useful tools, and convincing prototypes without depending on traditional development resources.

That is a positive change.

It will also make average digital work easier to obtain. Businesses will be able to generate something competent quickly, which means competence alone will stop being a meaningful advantage.

The gap will no longer be between companies that have a website and companies that do not. It will be between brands that merely possess digital output and brands that have built a digital experience with enough clarity, distinction, and depth to influence how they are perceived.

For a temporary idea, good enough may be the correct standard. For an internal workflow, speed may matter more than originality. For a prototype, learning may be more valuable than polish.

But when the website carries the reputation of the business, supports long-term search growth, processes customer actions, or becomes the primary environment through which people understand the brand, “good enough” becomes an expensive decision.

The cost may not appear immediately. It emerges through weak conversion, limited search visibility, difficult maintenance, inconsistent branding, and the eventual need to rebuild a platform that was never properly considered in the first place.

The Line is Intention

The line between vibe coding and intentional design is not whether AI touched the work.

It is not whether the creator wrote every line of code, used a visual builder, worked from a framework, or began with an existing component library. Digital work has always been built with tools, systems, and borrowed conventions.

The difference is whether the result has been directed.

Was the experience shaped around a real audience, or around whatever the model generated first? Does the visual language express the brand, or merely resemble the current internet? Is the content architecture capable of supporting search growth? Can the system evolve without collapsing under its own shortcuts? Has someone examined the details that users may never consciously notice but will still experience?

Vibe coding can shorten the path from instruction to output. It cannot decide what deserves to be built, what should be removed, what the brand should represent, or what standard the final experience must meet.

Those remain acts of judgement.

The future will not belong exclusively to people who code everything manually, nor to people who generate everything through prompts. It will belong to those who understand how to combine machine speed with human direction—and who know that the first working result is rarely the final designed experience.
